Within the framework of the talents and skills development platform of the International Union of Railways, organized in cooperation with the Latvian Railways (Latvian Railway) in the city of Riga from 29 to 30 October 2018, an international conference “Attraction of New Talent in Conditions of Increasing Competition and Open Labour Market”, which was held at the Riga Technical University. It brought together 200 representatives of the railway industry from 25 countries from Asia, Europe and Africa.
The main topic of this conference was the need to attract and retain the best personnel in the labour market. As a solution to the problem of finding young talented personnel for work on the railway, issues of the international network development, the activity of which is aimed at preparing a new generation of railway workers working on domestic and international lines of communication, with a deep understanding of business approaches, were considered.
The conference was opened by the President of the Latvian Railway Edvīns Bērziņš, who stressed that under the influence of new technologies and automation, the modern business world is changing rapidly and the railway sector is no exception.
Džineta Innusa, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia, in her speech addressed the main problems of most modern enterprises with the ability to attract talents, preserve and motivate them. “To succeed, we need relentless work,” she said. - Talent needs time to be transformed into mastery. The world is changing more quickly and innovation has a leading role.”
Vice-Rector for Research at our University A.A. Erofeev was invited to participate in the panel discussion “How to attract new staff now and in future?”, where he spoke on the topic “Trends in the development of higher transport education in the Republic of Belarus”.
The main issues that were covered at the conference:
- What should the company focus on in order to develop a new talent management strategy and increase employee motivation and participation.
- Attracting new staff through collaboration between schools and higher education institutions.
- How to increase the attractiveness of the railway sector and technical professions, taking into account the trend that young people more often choose the so-called "light" professions.
- Does the current educational system and industry-specific curriculum meet modern requirements? Is there a trained specialist who is ready to immediately fit into the company's team and is ready for what is required of him in his specialty?
- What are the internship opportunities for young people? Is it possible to start working with a company after an internship? Is feedback supported by potential employees, those who are currently unable to offer a job, to whom the company would like to draw attention to a potential employee?
- Opportunities for professional retraining and many other issues reflecting the current situation in the training of young professionals for the railway industry.
It is gratifying that the opinion of our university’s scientists is deservedly respected at the international level, and the level of our graduates’ training meets the requirements of the modern labour market.
