After the Second World War, the countries of Europe and the whole world intensified their foreign economic relations, and the world economy began to revive and recover. This exiged from Governments to coordinate their efforts in this field and to interact closer. In 1950, a Convention was signed in Brussels, which provided for the creation of a Customs Cooperation Council.

4 November 1952, the Convention establishing the Customs Cooperation Council entered into force.

And soon, 26 January 1953, the first session of the Council, which included then 17 countries, took place. This day later became the International Customs Day.

In 1994, the Customs Cooperation Council adopted its current name, the World Customs Organization, which emphasizes its global role. Now it is one of the largest international economic intergovernmental organizations, uniting 184 States.

The Republic of Belarus joined the World Customs Organization 16 December 1993.
